My paintings represent scenes that are both familiar and uncanny. There is an immediacy in the way they are executed that derives from my drawing practice with gouache on paper and other drawing techniques. My work engages with poetical aspects found in the myths of antiquity. The landscapes in my paintings and drawings convey a feeling of timelessness. They are inhabited by ambiguous, loosely defined human figures, who themselves become part of the landscape. The figures represent the fluid and transformative nature of myth, embodying the mystery present in early Greek and Roman narratives. I am interested in how art history interprets these narratives. Studying references from different moments in time allows me to connect with artists from the past while feeding my practice with new images and ideas. To me, the stories of mythology hold as much significance today as they did in ancient times. They are contemporary in their themes and passion, addressing fundamental aspects of the human experience such as love, loss, transformation, and the quest for meaning. |
